Launched in 1974, the Wilshire 5000 Index was the oldest broad-based US index covering the whole of the US investable market. It was named for the number of issues included at the time (approximately 4,700) and by the height of the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, the index included more than 7,500 stocks.
In June 2021, the new FT Wilshire 5000 Index Series was launched in association with The Financial Times, a trusted global financial media brand. The modernization and rebranding of the Wilshire 5000 provides US and global investors with complete coverage of the US investable market.
